Painting to Raise Funds

Zoos use training, painting and other activities as part of a comprehensive enrichment program for elephants. Enrichment is believed to help animals behave more naturally or to provide them with mental stimulation. Elephants both in the wild and captivity have been seen to "draw in the sand" with their trunks and so it was not such a big stretch to give them a paint brush. It is truly intended to add enjoyment to their lives. They are awesome creatures whose paintings are fascinating works of art.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo has been painting with their elephants for several years. The dedicated zookeepers that care for the elephants are continually on the look-out for stimulating activities for their charges. Jackie, Maureen, Barb, Wade, Brenda and Susan are always thinking of and devising interesting ways of training, feeding and interacting with these brilliant creatures. It is heartwarming to witness. Only recently has the zoo begun to sell the paintings, and the funds raised from selling Lucy's paintings have predominantly gone back to fund this.

Elephant paintings usually sell for about $300-600 USD. Paintings by other Asian elephants for sale on the world wide web and in Auctions have sold for as much as $6000 USD.

Elephants in Need took the painting project to Sri Lanka to create awareness, add enrichment to elephants in captivity and raise funds for Sri Lankan elephants in need. The sales of their paintings go towards food, operating and medical costs, facility expansion, veterinary equipment, and conservation for elephants in that country.
